Londoners officially marked their Olympic bid victory today with a celebration in Trafalgar Square.

Mayor Ken Livingstone and bid organiser Sebastian Coe were on hand to lead the festivities eight weeks after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the Capital the 2012 Games.

Celebrations were postponed following the terror attacks on July 7, the day after London's win was announced.

"I think it is an appropriate time to be reminding people that, eight weeks ago, we landed the biggest prize in sport and reminding the thousands of Londoners and people in the UK that helped us," Coe told the crowd.

"It is probably the biggest project that any city can take on, but I think in the bid process we showed we had a partnership that can work well, and we are now quickly making it work."

The gathering was also the first in a month-long schedule of events organised by the mayor to promote London to its residents and assuage their fears in the wake of the July bombings.

The "Everyone's London" campaign features over 100 events, festivals and days out, including jazz nights, boat races, dinner and theatre offers, a curry festival and culminating with a street festival along Oxford Street.

Organisers hope the campaign will draw Londoners back on to public transport and into the Capital's suffering shopping areas.
