I've come across a few start ups and small organisations in the past few weeks, who wonder if they are making the right decisions as regards marketing, so thought I'd throw a few ideas up on this forum for consideration. By the way - there are really no wrongs, or right, sometimes you have to test the market to see what works! Here's a few pointers (all from experience!) 1. KNOW YOUR MARKET. Define exactly who you are targetting, what are their buying habits, where and how do they shop (on-line, catalogue etc) and what makes your product/service stand out from the rest?) 2. WRITE YOUR ELEVATOR SPEECH. Know what you are going to say when someone asks you what you do, or how your business can benefit them. Come up with a catchy sentence or two that wraps up what you offer and entices them to ask more. 3. BENEFIT FROM FREE PRESS. Write a short press release and send to your local press and trade publications. PR is normally free, make sure you release says something interesting, include a special offer and a good quote from you, the MD or whoever. 4. FOLLOW UP YOUR MARKETING. If you send direct mail (make this very effective otherwise it will end up in the bin - include a PS and a great opening line) - then follow up with a call shortly afterwards. This is quite long so I'll stop there. I'll write some more and keep them on my website, if anyone needs more tips. HAPPY MARKETING! Rosie
