Hi guys,
Just posting to find out people's views of online fashion/clothes stores. I know a talented designer who is considering having clothes made which would then be sold online via a specially designed website. Is there much of a market for this or is it already very saturated? Also, what's people's opinions of buying clothes online (do you prefer buying them in store after trying them on etc)?
Thanks, all opinions welcome.

Hi,
I cant really comment on what your friends doing, but there is definitely a market for clothing online.
Look at Next and ASOS they both get A LOT of Internet sales.
Good luck.

Alot of people I know buy clothes via ebay (wierd I know) I like to go to the shops and buy them but rare stuff cant be found there. I cant see a problem with your idea, Ebay would be a good way to market it and get it going

There's a big demand for online clothes stores. People ARE willing to buy clothes without trying them on in a shop, provided you have a solid returns policy - just look how big the home catalogue market is. There are many people who actually prefer to try clothes on in the comfort of their own home.

One of my clients has been doing OK selling ladies clothes and shoes on ebay for the past year or so, and has just started her own non-ebay website shop selling ladies shoes. I wouldn't want to comment on whether ladies fashions outsell mens fashions online, nor whether particular fashion items sell better than others, but you can use tools like overture (http://inventory.uk.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/) to see what people are searching for. Personally, I sometimes find it difficult to understand this market since I dont buy clothes online and I'm far from being a fashion junkie, but then again I'm also based in an area that is well-served with shops for my meagre needs. Niche fashions, items that are exclusive to your website, items you cant get in the shops should do well, but they are also in a different category to the online shops that are just offering lower prices than retail on standard branded goods you can get in the high street.

Niche is the key; you can even sell branded goods if you find a niche to sell it in. Most fashion shops are 'niche' to start with - designer kids clothes, clothes for tall men, clothes for the larger lady, exclusive designs, uniforms, gothwear, sportswear, streetwear... every shop has it's target audience.
I wouldn't advise trying to directly compete with Gap, Next or M&S either online or off, unless you have the capacity to do so. But if you can target a particular community, then you should do OK.

Thanks for all the feedback. I also would never buy clothes online but it's good to hear that many people do. Will definitely ensure that the clothes are designed for a specific niche - certainly wouldn't hold out too much hope were the clothes to be competing with the likes of GAP.
