"The DIY approach is certainly cheaper but also demands a lot of re-submission to keep your site and its pages at the top of the list"
If you want a high ranking and all the benefits a search engine can offer, registration should be your first port of call.
Registering is reasonably straightforward and as with many other engines, the entire process is automated. To register with a search engine, go to its home page and look for a 'add URL' link. Once you have registered your web address or URL (uniform resource locator) with a particular search engine, your URL is then verified and added to an index.
The submitted site is normally available for queries in a few weeks although this varies from site to site. You will then be asked to submit metatags such a description or keywords or a simple summary that appears when someone searches for and finds your pages.
Directories such as Yahoo, on the other hand, are more selective and will not index all submitted sites. Directories are not automated systems, they're edited by people. To be added to a directory site you must find the relevant page your site should be added to within the directory and request that it be added there.
