I was wondering if anyone has any tips on what to put on a yellow page boxed advert and layout. I can design plenty of adverts that look good but obviously I want people to contact our business over others.
I have studied other graphic design adverts currently in. It will have to be in black and white to keep costs down.
Does anyone have any useful ideas? Research showing what works and what doesnt?
Thanks for any help

Depends what business your in.
Some company pay thousands for a half or full page add and will get a good return.
Different area's work differently. I for example have found that YP does not work for me.... used to spend £600 a year for a small add and the return just paid for the add.
Yet the Thompsons will give me a few grand a year, for £250.
I have tried many different adds in the Thompsons and have found that a credit card sized add, white knock out (this is black background with white lettering) gives me the best return.
If I relied on Thompsons, web etc my business would not survive.
I built up my buss through visiting people and sending companys that needed my service, information about what I do.
You need to target the people who need what you do.

I found the yellow pages an absolute rip off. Got 1 enquiry for a free number over an entire year.
I would say you could have the magority of the advert black and have white lettering then people would be drawn to the large amount of dark colouring.

Yellow pages is great for certain businesses - plumbers and builders. You have to consider if your target market will actually pick it up and use it.

I agree that it will very much depend on the type of business you have. First of all, you need to make sure that your target audience will actually use the Yellow Pages and see your ad.
Assuming that you've done that, and you're happy that Yellow Pages is going to be an effective place to advertise, my best advice would be to consider using some kind of "call to action" to persuade people looking at ads to call you rather than all of the competitors who will be listed on the same page. Maybe something like a "free X with every order" kind of offer?

beware of putting a free basic add in yellow pages - they sell the data and you'll end up on a million and 1 different spam lists -I did it with my first .biz email address and won'd be making the same mistake again!
Didn't like the YP sales man either - far too pushy
