Just started a business - new to this site.
We need accurate, honest advice. Not spin. Not lies.
Your headlines say that 2005 is the best year to start a business. That business confidence is at a high. These are lies. We know that things are tough right now and are about to get a lot tougher over the next 2 years.
I've started my business being aware of this. Therefore I have planned for it. Pretending that the economy is going to boom for the next few years is of no help to a new startup if they are basing their sales projections on a continuation of the last 10 years.
Still, good to see there is still some humour on this site: I liked the joke about "estate agent" as being a good startup business in the year 2005! It was a joke yes?

No time is a good time to start a business if you havent got the right idea and researched the market correctly. Alternatively 2005 is a great year for starting a business that genuinely fills a gap in the market and offers a service that people want. Saying that i would be interested in where they got the business confidence is at a high - possibly Labours website.....

Business live and die by sales and there are more ways to do this and for the small company to take on the big boys than ever before.
A good idea helps but selling is the key to success and for that reason 2005 is not a bad year to start a business.
PS people will still move houses so why is an estate agent a bad idea if they can do it well

Puzzled by this Alan - think this has been up since the New Year, when it was clear we were pulling out of the global downturn. Not massively sure what will happen over the next 2 years (and who really can predict what will happen? Mystic Meg maybe) but I think with interest rates, inflation, unemployment, growth etc as they are, 2005 is as good a year as any to go for it.
As has been said, your business is what you make it, the economic factors only provide a backdrop to your idea. And I think if you look at the housing market and the amount of money new estate agents make, the only joke would be is if you set up a decent estate agency and didn't make a profit! Why should estate agents be singled out as a business you can't start up? Where do you think they started - did they all sprout up from the ground one day?!
