I am planning to start a financial recruitment agency and would appreciate any advice that you can give me on:
- Martket research
- what free/fee based market research resources are there? I would like to know how the £23bn industry is broken down between geographical location and specialty i.e. financial, nursing etc
- where can i get statistics on employment trends i.e. frequency of job moves by age group, qualification and salary etc?
- average salary informatiion by qualification (for accountants) and stage i.e. part-qual, fully qual, 3 yrs pqe etc by region and industry and similar for non-accountants i.e. sales/bought ledger clerks, payroll clerks etc
- would the accountancy bodies supply data (mailing lists etc) by region, qualification etc?
- where can I get response rates, by candidates, to mailings, web sites etc
- Law
- what employment law do I need to understand/comply with?
- How many candidates make a good database? What size do people like
MP, RHI etc have?
- Are the REC courses on start-ups etc worth going on? Does accreditation help make sales?
Any other advice you can give is also welcome.
Thank you.
Craig.

Not asking for much are you? All jokes aside I had a question for you, and it perhaps is a significant question. Where are you going to get the money from to pay your financial employees to begin with. Are you aware that the employment law of 1973 states that your staff must be paid even if you have not yet been remunerated. Not to discourage you but a consideration. I have been thinking about setting up an agency too...and at the time that was my biggest concern.

I think you need to contact Business Link and see what they can help you with, be aware that they do offer advice but it is not particularly highly rated in the Small Business Community nor in reseach on performance Nationally.
If you let me know how you intend to operate I can help you with employment law, I am sure James could also answer some specific questions on accounting also.
It just is a bit unusual to expect this community to cover all your bases and I think if you are serious in starting up you will need to develop some of the research skills yourself asyou will be doing a lot of it.
In terms of marketing, Robin Houghton has a lot of great tips on her web site so start working through that too.

It seems strange to me to ask all of the questions.
It would make sense to me to go into a business I know something about so I know what will make it a success.
Asking all of the questions suggests limited knowledge.
Businesslink is however the best place to start - and don't get discouraged with them !

Craig
Some starting points for you (it sounds to me, not like you don't know what you're doing, but more that you just need some hard facts to back up your gut feeling/ write a business plan etc) -
(1) http://www.accountingweb.co.uk - loads of research resources and may be worth promoting your service on here (I've heard first hand that it works well for advertisers). Might be worth drifting around the community areas here
(2) http://www.rec.uk.com/home.htm - Recruitment and Employment Confederation - I think they represent agencies - might be able to get some info as a starting point?
(3) http://www.lawsoc.org.uk/dcs/fourth_tier.asp?section_id=176 - for the legals (a local Law Society Scheme)
(4) I think the best way to research your other questions (eg response rates to mailings/ number of customers to make a viable database) is to ask some other non-comptetitive recruitment agencies (try IT, Sales etc). Have you got any colleagues of colleagues who might be able to introduce you to anyone?
Hope that's a start, good luck!

Thank you all for your various inputs.
I'm not planning to offer a temp service initally so don't view cashflow as a problem. However, i will have to consider what impact this could have in terms of revenues.
I have visited many of the recruitment sites etc and have found their advice reasonably useful by very general.
I am an accountant and have experienced the services, from both sides, of the big named recruiters.
Apologies if my questions were too specific, I was trying cut down my research time.
Thanks again.

Dear All
All beit that we are now moving into 2008, we are interested in knowing whether everyone got to a satisfactory conclusion? We are curious as we are shortly to promote a fairly competent recruitment website, sufficient in design to take on a whole sector, and then offer this out to those starting up.
We will be posting shortly to

I would be grateful to hear what difficulties you had to deal with.

Hi, I already my own small recruitment agency. After being involved in recruitment for big corporate agencies for the past 4 years.
If you have to ask those questions, which in all honesty, and experienced recruiter should already know about their chose industry, then something isnt right.

Hi Craig,
I hope all of this great advice helped you out and that you feel confident enough to move forward. You also need to consider what software you will be holding those CV's you mentioned in for your new venture.
Are you going online ASP or client/server or are you going to muddle on with some homemade access or excell based application?
