Hello Alfred, good luck with the venture, I set up as bookkeeping/payroll bureau last August, made mistakes, set up ltd company, not a good idea apparently. Anyway only advice I can give is do not waste too much money on advertising word of mouth pays off better. Take any courses necessary (college etc) to obtain grants. I currently am also in full time employment till redundancy at end of April. Some setbacks, depression sets in, then next day something else comes through. I am constantly confused with a fully qualified accountant but always stress to new clients that I am not qualified to give advice, I will offer my advice but am not paid enough for anyone to sue me for wrong advice so take it or leave it. Always tell clients to seek advice from an accountant especially if they are in first year of trading. Beg, pester, write, phone or whatever you have to do to get clients. Print own business cards, cheaper, and pass at least 5 to all friends and family to pass on to anyone they know in business, hairdressers, garages, builders, anyone. Most importantly be determined, do not give in. If at the end of the day you do not succeed then at least you gave it your best shot. This site is excellent for advice from highly qualified members also.[

Hi Alfred,
I do lots of different things - I am self-employed, my proffesions include wood flooring sales consultancy, I represent an Austrian based printing company and I am also a bookeeper.
I went to an evening college where I did bookeeping course, I passed and I did Sage ( as many companies use it) Though you might find Quickbooks used by small companies.
I do bookeeping for two small companies ( Sage in one, Quickbooks in the other)Both companies are plumbing shops.
I got my first job through word of mouth and to the other I was recommended by the first one.
Drop me an email to see if I can advise...Depends what advise you after.Do you have any experience? have you done courses? Bookeeping is easy, you might not need the course at all so long you can see the logic of it all, its good to read the leaflets (especially VAT regulations). There is so much to be said, let me know what you need to know...
Good luck and be in touch.
