Does anyone know whether I may be able to claim housing/council tax benefit if I quit my job to start up my own business? The type of business that I intend to set up will not yield a profit for the first 6-8 months or so and whilst I have some savings it is not enough to live on its own.
Has anyone tried to claim after registering as self-employed?

A friend of mine (many years ago) opened a corner shop to service her neighbours etc - She started small and did cliam benefits - She was awarded weekly payments which reduced as she showed more wages / drawings paid to herself from the profits.
Not at all sure if there is still this type of scheme. But you should look into this yourself
Hope this is of help

Surely if you quit your job then you won't be eligible as it is your decision and essentially they would be funding your start-up venture.
Better to look for a proper souce of finance or possibly bettter for you - start smaller so you can carry on working at the same time as getting your business going so you can support yourself.

Mr Jib
If you quit your job you will not be able to claim for i think its 6 weeks. after that yes you can claim depending on how much money you are earning on a weekly / monthly basis. Visit the local job centre or council offices and explain to them what you are doing and they will guide you, who knows they may even offer you some sort of funding to help you get started. Also if you are claiming you should be abel to get access to some courses to help with the business.
