Hi everyone,
I am in desperate need of a good accountant in London.
If anyone can personally recommend an account to me who they've had a positive working relationship with that would be great.
Please email me at helenharwood@hotmail.com - you'd be doing me a huge favour!
Thanks!

I did actually help Joy set up when she past her exams last year and she seemed ok for someone newly qualified. I think she still does things like bookkeeping which I don’t do. Glad Ian has found her useful. She is in Romford (?) rather than London, but I think she does travel.
I do deal with lots of clients in the city, but generally only on a remote phone/email/letter basis and perhaps a meeting if I am in town. It depends how big your business is if this is suitable for you. If you are under 5 employees this tends to work out very well. Much bigger than 12 then face to face meetings will probably be advantageous as there tends to be a lot more issues, and more importantly you can afford to pay for the time.
You can get a list of accountants local to your actual location from the ICAEW website:

Sorry James you must be thinking of someone else. I actually passed (not "past") my exams thirteen years ago, a quick visit to the register of members on the ACCA's website can confirm this. And you certainly did not help me set up.
I chose to do bookkeeping as it ties in with the overall personal service I offer my clients.

It is a misunderstanding indeed. I thought you just passed your exams as you where previously offering bookkeeping services. I have checked back at my emails and it was in September 2005 you emailed me that that you had got your practicing certificate through, not your exam passes. [For other readers this means Joy had proven to her institute she had sufficient practical experience to call herself a Chartered Accountant, and practice on her own]
I am actually rather disappointed you don’t recall the amount of time I spent answering your questions last year, right down to helping you price some work and suggesting 2 business forums to post on, one of which (UK business forums) you are now one of the main contributors. I personally have always be most grateful to people taking the time to help me out, even in quite a small way.

James.
When youy first contacted me around the beginning of last year we had a long conversation about how I was in the process of applying for a practising certificate and how despite nearly 13 years working as a qualified accountant, until I got the certificate I could only offer bookkeeping. I distincly remember you saying that the ICAEW wouldn't even allow you to keep books without a practising certificate.
You can therefore imagine that it was a bit of a shocker to see you announcing to the forum that I had only passed my exams last year.
As for helping me to set up I had already been practising for about 4 months before I dropped you an e-mail telling you so. There is a big difference between a half hour telephone conversation in which we discussed how among other things we were underpricing jobs, and helping somebody to set up their practice.
As for the advice about forums I already know about them and was actually already a member of one of them but thought it would sound ungrateful to throw your suggestions back in your face so I kept quiet.
I certainly appreciate the advice and encouragement that you gave me last year and I too appreciate people taking time out to help. That's why we post on these forums so that we too can help by passing our knowledge on to others.
Anyway, I'm sure that the forum must be getting bored of this thread by now so if you wish to continue this conversation I'm happy to do so via e-mail.
Best wishes
Joy
