Bargain hungry shoppers will push up internet retail sales to £5bn this Christmas, web experts predict.
Despite the widespread downturn currently afflicting high street stores, the amount spent online in November and December will rise 40% compared to the £3.5bn spent during the same period last year, the Royal Mail research says.
According to the report, which was carried out by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), 9% of all retail sales during the next two months will be spent via the internet.
James Roper, IMRG’s chief executive, said the research shows shoppers are becoming more confident about purchasing goods online.
The study has been released to coincide with the launch of a new guide by Royal Mail which encourages retailers to cash in on the popularity of internet shopping.
