Hi all,
i was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts and/or experience of the way the credit crunch is impacting on their business?
How active are the owners/directors of SME's in looking at investigating newer more innovative solutions for reducing on-going costs and opening new revenue streams?
I deal in the fast changing world of integrated business telecoms solutions - and everything i read about the UK marketplace seems to back up my own findings that UK businesses are slow to adopt new technologies, such as VoIP and make the most from the early adopters of the latest advances in mobile/web integration - not to mention the fact that in the UK companies don't seem to value the kind of on-line marketing that can be had from blogs and social networking sites.... surely with money becoming ever tighter SMEs, especially, would be keen on looking at ANYTHING that might reduce costs and increase profitabillity?
....any thoughts?

It hasn't, yet, but I renew my mortgage in a few months' time and the higher rate they'll give me will put extra pressure on my business to make money.
Luckily, I don't have to borrow money to fund the expansion of the business...

hi Dan - i think in that case, and in the long run, you'll be one of the lucky ones!
rationalising existing outgoings to make more efficient use of the funds is going to be of paramount importance as the effects hit - you wouldn't believe some of the situations i come across.... businesses with ISDN connections that they didn't even know existed - and that they've been paying for!
it's crazy... i simply cannot understand the idea of a company trying to operate and actively throwing money down the drain....
you reap what you sow, eh?

Hi
I can endorse what Blits Your Bills says.I used to work for a telecoms company and I can remember one office that had three extra lines in the office that they knew nothing about, but were paying for. Crazy stuff . It wasn't hard to save them money!!

I'm in a similar boat to Dan Matthews. My business is ok for the time-being, but i'm not looking forward to sorting out another mortgage when the tie-in on my current one ends in 2 months - especially after reading this article earlier.
I've got two options. 1) I am lucky and get a good mortgage deal or 2) push my business to start making more money. I've got a feeling it'll be the latter...

I don't think that UK businesses are far behind in technology, rather they adapt to it quite easily. I have worked for a large telecom company in UK and more than a few million business customers who subscribe to their service and the advanced technologies are far from your assumption.
As far as I am aware a lot of so called telecom service providers who offer VoIP services use their solution and infrastructure.
As for VoIP, it is not as reliable as having a landline. If your broadband is down you are in deep trouble. VoIP is OK for cheaper calls etc. but when you are running a business you will need a reliable service.
Only a few months ago BT offered Geographic numbers as part of their package. Lot of businesses I know could not make calls through VoIP overseas because their 0560 numbers were not recognised by Int'l service providers.
As for paying for things that you don't need, they are done by Sales people and smart businessmen would check their outgoings and have a list of equipment/services against their purchases and bills.
Either they don't care about their money or they are just ignorant.

Hi Leejo and lionsolutions
indeed some salient points made there - and i would agree that at the higer end there are a lot of organisations that are making good use of new technologies as they are rolled out - but many in the SME marketplace seem to simply adopt the: "if it 'aint broke - why try to fix it?" attidude.
Lionsoloutions is right that VoIP as an emerging technology still has some teething troubles, but mostly in the residential/home user marketplace - we do have our own secure VoIP network at a business grade connection whilst - for the time being at least - it cannot completely replace the need for fixed line calls through the existing infrastructure, over the coming years it can only get better, eh?
And thanks Leejo - you're right... there are people out there paying for services that they simply don't require any more.... this is all about working smarter - not harder.
