Hi everyone.
Iv'e had an idea going around in my head for ages now but never got around to actually doing it.
Where I live, it seems like everyone has a PC and i'm always getting friends, family, and friends of friends etc phoning me up asking for help with their computers.
This got me thinking about setting up a small mobile PC repair business, just in the immediate local area.
There's a popular local newspaper here which I could put an ad in for not much money at all.
I was wondering if anyone one these boards had done anything similar to this. My main concern is insurance. Does anyone know of an insurance company that covers any possible damage to customers machines.
I'd be very greatful for any thoughts you all have.
Best Regards.
Anthony.

Great idea. Anthony!! Where abouts do you live? If you're in a reasonably well populated area, you'll never be short of work. Let's be honest, puters are always falling over and almost every household has at least one PC. You could also offer upgrades, help set up systems for the silver surfers who buy an hp package in a box from Tescos. Local ads are the key, I reckon. Never underestimate the ad in the post office window. 50p a fortnight and everyone who sees it either has a PC or knows someone who has one.
Good Luck!
Stephen

I know a lot of people that do do it and find the market is fairly saturated. there is a fairly big difference from calling a mate to fix a PC and paying a call out charge for a "pro" to come in.
There is more money to be had from SMEs of cause and you get the option of retainers (they get X hours a month for a fixed rate on a use or lose basis but discounted) however it will be difficult to get those that already have relationships setup to switch.... always dangerous to get someone to switch because you are cheaper as simply when someone comes along and undercuts you they will just move on again.

I looked into doing this a little not so long ago, but my findings were that almost everyone knows someone who can fix a computer, i.e. reinstall the OS and fit new hard drives etc.
There is money to be made with businesses mind, I have a client at the minute where I get paid to look after all their IT equipment and website, I spend around 2-3 days a week on them and my business receives more from them that I would working full time in a call centre. I spend most of the time updating their website which needs to be done really on a daily basis, but this sort of contract is ideal when you've just started out as you don't need to worry about paying you bills and you have money left over to advertise for clients to fill in the rest of the week.
I've spoke to companies in the past who provide a sort of pay as you go contract. You pay them £500, then when you call them out to do some work, they deduct it from that money. You then just need to top up when you run out of money. Might be something to think about.

Hello everyone.
Thanks for the information, it's given me a lot to think about. I don't suppose it'd hurt though to put an ad in the local paper and see if there's much response.
Thanks again!
Anthony.
