It probably comes as no surprise that London and the South East are the regions with the most start-up activity on our list. This is in keeping with overall regional stats.
According to the latest start-up figures from Barclays, 21% of all new businesses are started in London, followed by 16% in the South East.
In 2007 alone, 100,000 businesses were started in the capital, and a further 74,000 were set up in the South East. There were 14,000 more businesses set up in 2007 than the year before, and a whopping 4,100 of those were in the South East alone.
However, our poll proves that London and the South East are not the be all and end all for entrepreneurial activity. Scotland has proved very popular for the Startups 100 entrepreneurs taking third place on our regional podium.
The North East follows closely behind, despite being the least entrepreneurial place in England and Wales according to Barclays.
Overall, the most improved region for entrepreneurial activity, according to the bank’s figures, was the West Midlands where 4,400 more businesses were set up in 2007 than the year before.
The only region which saw a decrease in the rate of start-up activity was Yorkshire, where 500 fewer companies were started last year than in 2006.
