Cities across the UK have been ‘reborn’ thanks to the partnerships between city councils and local businesses, a new report claims.
The British Chamber of Commerce’s (BCC) ‘A Tale of the Cities: the best of times?’ features first hand accounts of how businesses have worked with local authorities and regeneration agencies to drive economic success.
“Over the past decade cities across the country have seen their economies revitalised, due in no small measure to the dynamism of the business community,” said David Frost, BCC director general.
“By striking up strong working relationships, business groups and local authorities have been able to lay the foundations for success, developing the infrastructure needed for investment and growth.”
However, Frost said that ‘big challenges lie ahead’, in ensuring all areas of UK cities shared the benefits of success.
According to the report, the challenges faced in strengthening existing business relationships with the community include combating social exclusion and polarisation, and increasing the transport capacity needed for competitiveness.
“The beating heart of any city’s economy is its business community. A flourishing business sector brings employment, wealth and vitality to cities, making it imperative that they are able to contribute to city regeneration strategies,” added Frost.
