i have an idea for a business which i know can be run profitably, as i know another company which is doing the same thing
anyway i was considering explaining it to some friends with the idea of setting it up as a business, however i am concerned that they may take my idea and implement it themselves
how can i guard against this?
i am already running another business so wouldnt be able to run with this idea on my own

I know this isn't really that helpful but surely if they were true friends then they wouldn't run of with your idea, you should be able to trust them. [

Just some advice.

I have to agree with Brett - just how nice are these "friends"?!?
Also, a lot of people are not bothered about starting a business - why would your friends do it?
Why do you need to tell them?
If you cannot do it on your own, you will have to speak to someone at least!
Get your research done and build up your knowledge before discussing it - at least then you will be ahead of your "friends" when you do dicuss it. Anyway, just how much you need to dicuss may be well short of giving the whole game away.

i have learned there are no friends in business, previous experience lends me to proceed with caution

Do you mean business associates or friends as in the enerally accepted definition of the word?
Business Associates - Why discuss it at all?
Friends - Depends how close you are and how much you trust them.

Why not discuss it with professional advisors - that's what they're there for and they have ethical standards: banks, business links, FSB, chambers of commerce etc. They probably also wish they had a penny for every time someone came to them with a brilliant new biz idea that they were worried about having nicked, as they could have retired by now.
cheers

howto, you are coming across as incredibly paranoid and unwilling to listen to any advice given. Robin has had ample opportunity on this forum to promote her own services and yet, instead, has offered good support and advice to people instead (backed up by much experience).
What everyone is trying to say is don't be overly worried about people stealing your idea. Also, make use of the professionals that are there to help you. Do your research and you are already ahead of others who may latch onto your idea.
If your idea is that easy for anyone to pick up and run with then why haven't they? They may not want to or may believe it is unworkable.
If you're that paranoid about the idea being "stolen", why bother discussing it at all?
Robin's right, ideas are ten-a-penny to professional advisors. Robin wasn't saying yours is, just that it may be better getting advice from those with knowledge, experience and an unbias outlook rather than speaking to your mates.

I agree with all of the above.
Bank managers for instance must see good business every day (and bad ones)
But they still stay as bank managers, they do not all of a sudden go out and start a rock climbing school in Holland or tropical fish company in Iceland.
Just because is is a good idea, not everyone is going to pinch it.
Advise from most of the people who pop up on this forum seems to be good.

Hi How To,
If you are looking for a way of 'bouncing it off someone' to get feedback on the commercial viability, try
http://www.thelightbulbfactor.com
They have an 'ideas input' facility and it's all done under a 'non disclosure agreement' so remains confidential at all times.
However, I'd also agree with some of the other comments - paranoia will get you nowhere - just get on with it!
Good luck.
Gus.
