Route to market

Q. I have designed and developed a prototype for a product I feel is extremely marketable and consumer friendly. However, I’m a bit stumped as to where to go from here. Who should I be approaching with regards to getting the product licensed and finding a route to market?

Batten down the hatches

Q. My business hasn’t really felt the affects of the downturn yet and trade seems to be as busy as ever. However, I’m worried I’m taking things for granted and conditions may worsen in the near future. Are there any steps I can take to recession proof my business now?

Trade fairs

Q. I’m in the process of starting a small food production business and have visited quite a few trade fairs and exhibitions in search of ideas, contacts and inspiration. However, I often find it’s hard to decide which ones will offer the most value. As some are at opposite ends of the country, how can I appropriately choose which ones to attend, and are there any ways of maximising my chances of getting tangible value out of them?

Loans vs investment

Q. I need to raise £20,000 to get my business off the ground and have been advised to go down the bank loan route as opposed to giving up equity. Is it better to stick with loans for relatively low amounts of investment, or would an angel or private equity firm have more to offer?

Investor friends

Q. I am starting a business and a friend is willing to invest some money but is not going to give up his day job - how do I formalise this legally and what are the issues I need to think about?
