Hi, I am in the process of setting up an online gallery for artists and photographers to sell their work.
I want the site to be fairly exclusive selling only certain work and therefore I want to be able to control what art/photos appear on my site.
Making my site completely automated so that all uploads are done by the artists and then get e-mailed to me to moderate requires a huge amount of work, so therefore it would be much easier if an artists allows me to upload the images of their work.
However, does preventing artists from uploading their work seem off putting?
Thought/comments/suggestions much appreciated.

If I were you I would at how long it would take you to upload all of their work. How many artists etc do you think you will have on the site? If they have 100 pieces of work to upload each, how long would it take? Offset this against how long it will take you to develop / modify a CMS, and see which comes out better for you.
I built a website for an artist friend of mine, and it took an age for me to upload the images, descriptions, titles etc. When I rebuilt the site, I built a CMS for him to be able to do it himself.
More time spent building the site now will mean less time administering it later. Plus if it is more self sufficient, it gives you time later to get on with other things, rather than admin tasks.

As long as you can do proper internet promotion, and draw target traffic to your site, there is no reason you can not be successfull..

I think it would be fine if you did the uploading yourself..but it does depend on how many of each artists' work you are going to include. Sounds like a cool idea for a site.

At the site, you can install Joomla (a CMS) with ZoomGallery. This way you can control the images that go up and accept them if you want. You can also divide the images by galleries.

I would let them upload photos by them selves. After that you can accept or deny them from admin area. There are many softwares that can do this, for example one mentioned above.
