Hi all,
My sister has just successfully had her second child, my other sisiter has a 4 month old, my brother has a 3 year old and my best friend has a 2 year old. From sitting around with all these new parents and listening to their discussions and problems I think I have come up with a really good business idea in the baby market.
I have done a little research which is still on going but have yet to find a single company which offers the service I want to offer, hence me not giving too much away.
What I can say is I would like to get some advice from someone regarding a online web store where customers can browse and purchase from. Also web marketing, brochure production, wholesaler contacts, company branding & packaging etc are all issues I would like to discuss with someone without feeling like I am giving my idea away to a possible competitior.
Hope someone can help.

Hi,
Yes I know the feeling when you have a good idea, the last thing you want to do is pass it around for everyone else to benfit from !!
I can advise you on an online web store with a catlogue of products or services your visitors can browse through. We also run a range of web marketing ideas for various web sites and more details can be found on our web site http://www.c2webdesign.co.uk , if you need advice in this area I would be pleased to help.
Please contact me at contact@c2webdesign.co.uk and we can discuss further.

If you want to discuss your business idea without the fear of it getting stolen by someone why dont you contact your local businesslink and arrange a meeting the initial meeting is free and they can advise you and any aspect of the business you are thinking of setting up.

Hi,
As a mum of 1 and another on the way I would have to say you would need to do a lot more research than just on friends and family. Everytime I think I have a good idea after getting frustrated with an area of child development, which just does not seem to be catered for - wo and behold there is something already invented (usually by parents) or marketed on that subject.
This does seem to be an area very well covered but if you can find a new angle - then best of luck!

Thanks for your input. I wonder if I can ask you a question:
What ideas did you come up with that were dashed in the long run?
I feel that I have come up with a little gem of an idea. I have researched over the web, through magazines and newspapers, but have yet to go to the street, and I can't find any company that offers what I want to offer.
In regards to my family and friends, who all have children under the age of 3, they all thought it was an excellent idea and something they feel they would have used if it was available whilst pregnant and afterwards. But only if it was corrently marketed and brought to their attention.
Sorry I can't be more forthcoming with info but as I said before i dont want to let this slip out .

Hi there,
Ideas such as a portable childs toilet seat. When potty training there comes a time when you have to extend it to 'outside' but children won't use a public toilet (have you ever seen one fall into a loo??) and after thinking about it a bit I then discovered that John Lewis already sell a brilliant fold up one (which I bought).
Also a portable potty with disposable liners - fantastic if your little one is caught short at the park and you really don't fancy those dodgy look public loo's - sold by just about every man and his dog!
Then there was the buggy board and of course most annoying of all is a small tupperware type pot with different compartments - perfect for bottle feeding on the go. If your out and about you can keep a bottle of water hot in one of those hot bags - but it is not really hygenic for formula made up bottles, so hey presto keep the water hot and empty one chamber of previously measured out powdered milk into the bottle. Sadly already sold by Mothercare.
Oh well I do still have one in mind - but think I may need the help of an engineer so it will probably never get off the ground!
Good luck with your angle though!

Thanks for your input again guest.
Sorry to hear none of your ideas have taken off, im sure one will sooner or later. And when it does good luck to ya.
Its also good to hear, for me that is, that you have been thinking long and hard about new ideas in the baby area. And as it stands you havent thought of my idea yet! Well ytou may have but not penned it in your last message. This is only fueling my thoughts over the last few weeks that my idea is what i think it is...a cracker.
Will keep you posted. Good luck with your future ventures too.

Hi
Where abouts are you in the country?
The reason I ask is that if you are in Selby North Yorkshire there are grants available.
Basically if no one has the same business as yourself in Selby District then Leader Plus from SDC has a large amount of funding available for Business Start Ups, this is up to £50,000 per project and is match funding. I am sure that in other areas there would be other help too.
Plus think of your age if you are 18 - 30 and unemployed or only part time working then you could get help from Princes Trust.
Hope this helps
Gail

Without wanting to sound negative, there are very few new ideas, and even fewer successful businesses based on them.
I agree with the advice of previous posters - do some systematic research, know your market inside-out and estimate its potential size and value, seek the advice of government-sponsored business advisers who will have no interest in stealing your idea. You can speak to the kinds of suppliers you are talking about without giving any specifics away, in fact you'll have to do this before launching your biz because estimating costs will be necessary for your financial projections.
When you start talking specifics, you could always get people to sign an NDA, although many view these as not only over-the-top but also a sign of lack of trust. If you don't trust them, why should they trust you? At some point you may have to 'share' your idea in order to bring on board the kind of expertise you need to make the idea succeed as a business. Just a thought.
good luck in your project.

Robin,
Thanks for you input.
I can say that my idea does not involve re-inventing the wheel, far from it. As you said there are very few new ideas in this market. I feel you dont have to come up with a brand new service or product to be successfull when there are already many things out there in the baby market which are done or offered at a sub-standard level.
All I have done is seen a gap in the market where I will be taking a service and product which already exists and marketing it in a new way meaning less hassle, less expence and an easier life to parents without the loss of quality.
I have taken the advice of people on this site and discussed my idea with my local Prince's Trust. They were really helpful and really impressed with my idea.
So iguess its a case of: watch this space!!
Matt
