Hi
I need to take credit card details over the phone but I am a sole trader so can't really afford high bank charges for the privilege of getting my money straight away, instead of chasing customers up for weeks on end.
Can you please advise the best way to take credit card details over the phone or if there is a really good internet system.
I currently use paypal, but their website is confusing and long winded and I don't like the fact that the customer has to have a paypal account to pay me money.
Thanks
Jane

Paypal business accounts can take card payments from customers without them having a paypal account.
There are lots out there to look at:
google checkout
http://www.worldpay.com
http://metacharge.co.uk
http://nochex.co.uk
All these offer IMA (internet merchant account) and can just pay into a bank account. I don't know about timesscales, etc or costs.

To take payments over the phone, you need a Merchant Account (which in turn requires a Business bank account). Streamline is the leader, as far as I know, and you can get reduced rates if you are an FSB member. I pay about 1.95% for cc and 30p/transaction for debit cards. I have a mobile terminal with 123send.
It's the best thing I ever did and much cheaper than Paypal and the money gets to you in 3 days instead of 5 to 7 days with Paypal.
