Direct Mail - database

I've often wondered just how effective this really is as in our house anything that falls out of a magazine or is shoved through the letterbox by hand or delivered to 'the homeowner' gets thrown straight in the bin. I'm afraid I view junk mail as exactly that, junk. The same applies at work and it should be noted that as businesses spend a lot of money having to dispose of such items, its largely frowned upon.

There are two ways to buy, either find the list owners themselves, or use a list broker (bit like estate agency for datbases!), then there are online (email) and offline (DM) list providers (most now do both, but some are better than others). I have strong-sig knowledge of IT and small business, what is your target market?

Lots of list brokers advertise in trade press like "Marketing Direct" (if not WHS then try the library) or I can drag some copies out of my recycle box.
