What are people's views about paying for monthly search engine submissions?
I have been told that search engines change the way they index/rank web pages (using a different algorithm) so that it is necessary to keep submitting.
Also, my site is submitted to 80,000 engines and yet I thought only a handful were really useful. I also thought it could take months for some sites to get updated and therefore apart from MSN coming online is there any advantage to submitting monthly?

Janet,
Something like 2/3 of all searches are made on Google, and the vast majority of the other 1/3 on 4 or 5 other engines.
Anyone claiming to be submting you to 80,000 is talking a lot of rubbish IMO.
I am not a techy, but what counts is not being listed but where the page in ranked. And that means a well designed site and lots of links to it from other sites.
Some of our techies will no doubt be able to help further, but in short waste of cash.
Regards,

Only half a dozen search engines are worth being listed on in UK and the rest are a waste of space. Once you are listed by Google they will keep revisiting automatically (mine gets looked at every couple of days.
The key to good positioning on Google is optimisation and inward links and according to Google you only have 25 of the latter and could do with a few more

I am not a techie and this is new to me. The site has only been up 2 months so I assume these links are where I have registered the site in various places. How do I get more?

You may find this link useful: http://www.search-this.com/search_engine_decoder.asp as it shows the major search engines and how they feed off or supply to each other. These engines filter down their results to secondary engines so it's really only the top ones you have to worry about.
In terms of finding link partners you may want to try this. Do a search on Google for your targetted search term, the term you want to be found for and make a note of the URL of the site that is at No. 1.
Then go here: http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/ and enter your URL and your competitor. You will then be able to see who is linking to their site and who is linking to you. Go through the list of sites and simply visit them to find out if you can submit your site to be listed or linked to.
Make sure that the sites you visit or request a link from have relevant content and a good PR. You can find out the PR (page rank) of any site by downloading the Google Toolbar http://toolbar.google.com/ Try and make sure that you only link up with sites of PR3 or above as below that, Google ignore the incoming link anyway.

I have done a lot of research on this over the past few months and you can get a lot of info from http://www.webproworld.com
a lot of what phil has said above is very important, but there are a lot of things you might be doing which could hurt your listings, the forum link above will help you establish those faults
submissions mean nothing, content, speed, links and keywords are everything.
it will take around 6 months for your work to be really effective, dont pay for anyones services as with a bit of time and research you can do it yourself, i have and are doing very well out of it. in the meantime spend a few quid on google adwords they will generate you some really good leads.

You could also have a look at Linkpartners website http://www.linkpartners.com/ as that is quite a useful way of acquiring links.
Website promotion is much easier for me as I only have to optimize my site for one word but yours is going to be more difficult as the first thing you need to know is what are the likely words and phrases that people will input into a search engine to find your site
