If you have never run you own business before it might be better to start small with something that doesnt require a lot of outlay to begin with just so you can gain some experience of working from home and fitting it round your family.
A good place to start is with running your own website such as the ones advertised at www.webvolume.co.uk. There is very minimal outlay - approx £50 and it doesnt cost anything to keep it running, just a couple of hours a week promoting it - which could all be done on free sites
Working from home takes a lot of discipline its so easy to get distracted with normal household chores, kids, pets, the TV! you have to have some kind of commitment otherwise it will never work, set aside a couple of hours an evening when the kids have gone to bed and all the ironing is done, its the best way of making sure you are suited to a home based job.

If you are going to work from home then it's definitely worth turning your spare bedroom/room into an office. I worked from home for years and didn't have a separate room- no matter how many times you tell somebody you're trying to work you'll always get disturbed.
Oh, and get a lock.

To run a home business successfully from my experience needs one to quickly plug into some skills development. Among the skills should be the understanding of management, marketing, and cashflow.
Get a mentor/s with speed as this will help you to avoid the many landmines that can easily kill your dream. You will also need to be teachable as it is easy to want to go it alone and think you know what you are doing, or believe in your idea so much that you can not see it faulter.
I now always say it's easy to be a success and easy to be a failure, there is a very thin line between the two.
Networking is a great place to get good ides and support from like minded people at no cost to you. Today there numerous ideas to start-up a business at a very low cost. Participating in forums like this one as well, is a great way to start. So if you are here and you are new to running your own business, whether it's form home or wherever, give your self a pat on the back for you are moving in the right direction.
If there is anything I can do to help anyone, I will be more than happy to share what I have known to date.

Yes define one room as your "work room" this really helps.
Sounds stupid but i always go for a walk around the block too before starting my day, so I feel like i have left the house and gone to work

I agree with having an office. You need to designate a space that is simply just for working, otherwise you'll struggle to get things done (in my case anyway) From time to time, I'd get a little slack and decide that working from home would be working from bed, this resulted in zero work (100% comfort), which is when I decided to convert the spare room.
Here is a potentially interesting article on tax benefits for home workers hurrah.

I might follow in JohnPaulGrant's footsteps and have a stroll around the block before I go to the 'office', it sounds like a nice idea weather permitting.
