You'll need to apply for a Merchant Account with your business banker and they'll advise you on machines, etc.
This might not be straight forward and often it depends on turnover and length of time trading as to whether or not they'll give you one. The banks seem to quote charges on a case by case basis and so it's hard to generalise. You'll have to pay more if you don't charge a certain amount through your merchant account each month and you'll be charged more if a certain amount of your transactions are "customer not present" transactions (i.e. over the phone or fax).
If you're selling on the internet or by phone/fax have a look at the WorldPay facility. It's now backed by one of the big banks (NatWest I think), is only £350 to set up (last time I looked) and allows you to take payment on the internet, by phone/fax, and face to face (but you process the transactions on the internet).
Credit cards and debit cards are expensive to process - you have to pay a set charge or percentage per transaction and so you may have to adjust your prices accordingly to make it worth your while.
Good luck!
