Hi all, the domain name I really wanted for my business belongs to someone else but he doesn't use it (ie the page is 404 not found). From what I have managed to research on the internet he does have a shop of this name.
The domain is due to run out next April so my query is this - do I contact the bloke now and ask if he wants to sell or do I wait till midnight the night before it runs out and try and buy it when it runs out??
I don't want to approach him and him want megabucks for it or remind him that he has got the domain and remind him to renew it next year?? Or is there a way that a 3rd party company would approach to say as he isn't using the domain, would he want to sell it?
What would you do??
RE: Domain Name Advice Please!
Personally (if i couldnt find a better domain),
I would wait, or register with one of the "snap back" companies.
I would also make sure he doesnt have a trading business of the name, offline, as in mortar.

Whats a 'snap back' company?
He does have a shop that trades under this name yes. But I have a business that trades under this name too?

A 'snap back' is a service typically offered by a domain registration company to automatically register a domain in your name when the current registration expires.
GoDaddy offer such a service (they call it Backordering) - http://tinyurl.com/dc32u

Unfortunately will not mean the domain will be available for purchase at midnight on the day it is set to expire. Will be a few months afterwards and on a random date (will not be made public).
At this time the owner will be notified by their domain name company plus Nominet asa to whether he wants to renew.
There are companies that you can pay to use robots to keep checking the domain until it is available ready for repurchase (saves you having to manually search each day).
Chances are if he owns the registered business name he may just keep renewing until he does decide to use it

Not quite true, they nearly always come up for renewal 92 or 97 days after expiry.

A snap back company can register domain names for you the second they become available.
just be aware that he may be using the domain for email purposes and may not take kindly to losing it.
Saying that, he should have paid for the registration to continue

123-reg.co.uk also have a similar service called 'Domain Watcher'. I have successfully used it in the past to acquire a .com domain for a client who already had the .co.uk domain. With the 123-reg domain watcher service, if the domain is renewed, you can still reuse the service you have paid for by watching a different domain.
