Can a health club legally keep you in a contract for a year ????

It depends if you signed a contract for a year or not really...
Health clubs that I have come across charge say £199 for the year in 12 installments by DD. If I didn't want to go to the gym any more I would still have to pay the remainder.

well I think it is unfair my hubby brought it as a gift for a year at christmas but yep it does say a year but we have already paid £415.00 and I have only used it about 20 times !!!!!!!!!!

Well if you bought it at Christmas you've used 6 months, the club "may" be willing to give you 6 months back but they are under no obligation to.
They won't be interested if you have used the club 2 times or 2000 times or if you have no intention of using it again until the end of the year. They sold a one year package to you, if you decide not to use it then they can't be held responsible for that. If the club closed and you were unable to use their services then you could ask for half your money back...

i was told by someone in the industry that if you move so that visitng the club is no longer viable, almost all clubs will refund you outstanding fees, minus a small notice period of 2 or 3 months...
but perhaps i have been incorrectly informed.
Anyway! shame on you, quitting! get down the gym, its been paid for and you will reap the benefits of helthy mind and body
