HM Revenue & Customs has issued a reminder to all those who need to complete self assessment tax returns.
The deadline for completing online self assessment tax returns is January 31, 2009. If your tax return is not completed by this date, you may receive a penalty.
It is necessary to allow 7 days extra to register and receive your activation pin by post if 2009 is the first year you are completing online returns.
The online service for self assessment makes doing your tax return easier by adapting in response to your answers to questions about your income and circumstances; doing your tax calculation for you automatically so that you will know how much you have to pay right away and enabling any tax refund to be made to you more quickly.
A four page guide to online filing can be found at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/carter/easy-online-filing.pdf.
And an information pack on self assessment, which includes information on how to complete your tax return online as well as useful features and help and contacts for getting started, is also available.
