Hi guys, something you may want to consider when starting your website is choosing a UK based provider with UK based servers, or at the very least making sure you have a .uk domain name.
Either of those things will ensure you show up in Google when people search for "UK based sites only".
So to summarise...
.co.uk name + US servers = OK
.com name + UK servers = OK
.com name + US servers = not OK for UK seo

I have been writing and researching how UK/US hosting can affect search engine optimisation (SEO) and the inclusion (or even worse the exclusion) of websites in country specific indexes.
Darrens offering is far too simplistic. It basically states that if you have a .co.uk domain its OK to host in the US. This is not true for many reasons such as EU Data Protection laws (you maybe exporting client data illegally out of the EU), latency (your visitors will experience slow connection times at certain times of the day) and the possibility of being excluded from the UK Google index.
I ALWAYS recommend the following:
1. if your target audience is UK based then host in the UK AND use a .co.uk domain name
2. if your target audience is worldwide then host anywhere but remember to consider EU Data Protection laws and latency.
Today Google is SO IMPORTANT TO ALL websites - it is not worth the risk of being excluded.
Also, beware: "the words C H E A P and reliable do not live together for long". If you are serious about your business then get it properly hosted with a reliable host; Its no good thinking "I will move it if the C H E A P host becomes unreliable", it could well be too late by then and could be watching your business washing down the virtual drain....

I been happy with hostgator so far.
Downtownhost looks like another good one that offers similiar services and prices to hostgator but I think it seems to be even better quality. Ive heard nothing but good things about downtownhost.

David I would definitely agree that if your target audience is primarily UK-based, then the web site should also be hosted in the UK for other reasons as you mentioned.
From just the perspective of SEO though (showing up when someone says "show UK results only", you need either a .uk name or to be hosted on a UK IP.

We used Hostgator for a while but our blogs hit resource limits and our sites were repeatedly penalised so we had to look for someone else. We put aside the desire for so called unlimited/high space/bandwidth providers and went with www.everymanhosting.com who have proved absolutely excellent over the last year. Really fast support response times via email, phone and messenger and great help with any issues we have had. UK servers and the best part - they monitor for problems and let us know that some of our site elements were generating 404s and offered to help us out with it.
