Hi Guys
Wonder if anyone can help? I'm really keen to ditch the rat race job i currently have and start up my own business/ shop selling cool and rare gifts. I may be joining up with my sister who wants to head this up first and i'm thinking of going in as a partner to the new business.
I wanted to know if there are any training courses that anyone can recommend for me, preferably free and evening/ weekend courses. Not really sure which ones are the best? It would need to cover off all accounting, book keeping, taxes, guide to deadling with distribtors etc and all financial aspects that i need to know as this is the area where i have the least knowledge.

Much appreciated,

Hi Nina,
Hoping it is okay to promote our own services in answer to your question... my company Journey Learning offer an audio training package "The A to Z of Starting a New Business" (which we produced in association with Crimson Publishing, the company behind this startups website). The programme is ideal for people currently in employment as it allows you to develop skills while commuting to and from the office (the thought process behind Journey Learning).
We have an offer for "startups" members (see the "Offers for Startups Forum"
http://www.startups.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1317).
The offer allows members to purchase the first CD in the 8 CD programme for just £2.00+p&p.
The sample CD includes more than 55 minutes of audio outlining:
* the challenges you face as an entrepreneur
* how you start out
* whether you are suited
* the skills you need
* how you start a business while working
* how you should pay yourself
* what it means to work from home
* whether you have the right personality
* the family issues that should be taken into account, as well as
* how you get organised and
* how you optimise your tax affairs.
I think it might be a good starting point and hope you'll take us up on our offer.
Please see our website for more information - http://www.journeylearning.com/startups-offer.htm
Thanks - and good luck.

You may qualify for a New Entrepreneur Scholarship. (There are several different things you must qualify by - the primary one being whether the area you live in is considered a qualifying "deprived ward" (one of the 1250 most deprived) - check out the government's Neighbourhood Statistics website to see).
There are several other things too, but they are explained on the NES website.
Funds are possibly made available (up to £3,500) and you receive training in various aspects of business.
Websites you need to check out:

As I dont know your age you might be eligable for PT help. You can go along and see your local business advice centre whom will be able to help with advice for free and tell you where you can access all of the training that you need to help you start in your business.
To give you an idea of organisations that are there that could help:
Business Links
Citizens Advice
Careers Advice
Your Local Council
Inland Revenue
Websites like these
Hope this helps
