Hello
I have a question..I got an email today from inktomi today saying that i will not have free listing with yahoo after the 15 of this month and to go to overture site match which seems to be a ppc.Do i have to do this? Will i not be listed with yahoo if i don't?
The thing is i was looking at google adwords as finding my website is almost impossible on there and i can't afford to do both.
While we are on the subject of listings why is it that i'm in the top 10 on yahoo uk if you search for childrens clothes but nowhere to be found on google? I'm trying to understand these things a little more myself instead of paying someone else to do it.
And another thing why if i'm in the top 10 on yahoo am i not getting loads of people comming to my site from there?(only 10 a day) Am i missing something?
Ok so that was a little more than one question[

]
Hope you can help

Yahoo! are just about to launch a new paid for inclusion service via Overture, it is called Site Match. It is a hybrid between pay per click and pay for inclusion. I.e. they are trying to get as much cash out of you as possible. For more info see http://ov.ineedhits.com/. In answer to your other question, if you are currently listed in Yahoo! then you will continue to do so. However, your competitors could jump ahead of you in the rankings by using Site Match.
Google and Yahoo! are now two completely different search engines which is why you have different rankings on each.
You probably don't get lots of people visiting your site even though you are ranked number 8 in Yahoo! UK for a number of reasons. Firstly, you are no.8 and most people don't go further than number 3 to 5. Secondly, your listing is displayed like this:
View Shopping Basket. How To Shop. Delivery & Returns. FAQ. Contact Us. Security & Privacy. About Us. Childrens Clothing and Designer Baby Clothes. Welcome to Discount Childrens Clothes. ... Welcome to Discount Childrens Clothes. On our site you will find ex-chainstore childrens clothing, designer childrens clothes and designer baby clothes. ...
It could do with a clean up and further optimisation so it reads in English and makes sense. Also try to make it attention grabbing.
Finally, Yahoo! is huge but Google still dominates the web for search, so try your best to optimise for that.
If you want to learn more about search engines and optimisation then I recommend you visit http://www.webmasterworld.com/home.htm. Hope this is of help.

Google is, as Kieron says, the biggest search engine by a country mile. A lot of the smaller search engines actualy use Google as their engine...
Google is easy to master should you know the right people. The easy way is to 'submit' your site to it's engine (http://www.google.co.uk/addurl.html). Humans (real ones) review your site and if they deem it useful, they can effect how high it gets ranked.
How do I know this? An old friend does this for Google in his spare time [

FYI:
"Google rankings : This is a brand new web site, so it will take approximately 3 months to appear in Google rankings."
This wording is on your site designers portfolio page. And in my experience it doesn't take 3 months - the GoogleBot runs once a month. So at worst it may take 4 weeks. Just my view anyway. I only know because I have a few sites. I started a new site about a fortnight ago and it is at the top of google [

Teresa, your site is already in Google so there is no need to submit it again. And FYI there are really easy ways to get listed in Google in a matter of days not 3 months, but I'll save them for a PM ;-)
Anyway the problem you have is that although you are in Google you are not in the first 3 pages for the term "childrens clothes". However, there are only 116,000 results for that term so it shouldn't be too hard to crack.
Your site already has a Google PR or 5 which is respectable. One way to enhance your rankings is to exchange links with other relevant sites. This isn't the total solution but will help.
Another way to try and boost your visitors is to use Google AdWords. This is where you advertise your site on Google when people search for certain keywords, i.e. "childrens clothes". Have you tried that? If not, give it a go but remember to set yourself a realistic limit on what you can afford to pay per click.
Cheers!
Kieron

Hi Kieron
Yes i have had a look and a play, the keywords i put in came back that it would cost me 0.96ish per click, but that was to be top which i'm not bothered about, almost went ahead untill i got the e-mail from inktomi, that's why i posted the origanal message. The only thing is i have read postings on here that people don't feel they are getting enough sales to compensate for the ppc(i know there is a really intelligent way of saying that, but it's late and my brain is turning to mush!) Being on a tight budget, like most people i'm just a bit nervous about doing it.From what i read you can pause a campaign so i guess i can do this if things don't work out and i need to change something as i will be doing this myself, i can see that happening.
How does linking to other sites enhance your listing?

Hi Teresa,
regarding site linking, read the above link to webmaster world and it explains why linking is important. Broadly; the principal is, the more sites that link to yours, the more important Google thinks your site is. Therefore, it places you higher in the rankings.
When setting up a new campaign with AdWords, it always suggests the highest cost per click. However, you will need to trial different things in order to make it effective. Why not set it at say 15p a click and see what happens? Monitor your impressions and clicks and see what works. Also try niche keywords that other people aren't bidding on. There may be lots of people bidding on "childrens clothes" making it a high cost per click. But there will be probably fewer people bidding on "childrens designer clothes" or similar less popular search phrases. And don't forget that you can set a maximum spend per day, so that you never exceed your budget.
At the end of the day it's all about trial and error and working out what works and what doesn't. If you know for examply that for every 10 people who visit your site, you get 1 that purchases as well as your average basket price then you can work out how much you can spend per click.
I started using AdWords 2 years ago and spent maximum £5 per day. I now spend between £700 to £1000 per day and still make a good return. However, it did take a lot of time and effort to get to the stage I am at today.

Hi Teresa, I don't actually sell anything. I use Internet marketing to promote certain products and services via affiliate programs. You can see an example of one of my basic sites at www.ukoffer.com.
