When www.expodition.com went live 2 and a bit weeks ago, I sent out a press release which generated a lot of interest via email, etc.
Last week I was contacted by The Times as they found the site interesting and wanted to run a story. I had an interview with them then and there, (over the phone), and you can see the results here:
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,8213-2156301,00.html
Also, they've listed expodition.com in their Top 100 travel web sites!!!
This can be seen by clicking on the 'Travel' image on http://travel.timesonline.co.uk and clicking on Page 6.
Didn't expect this just a couple of weeks after going live. Just hope I can keep the momentum up, now :o)
Sorry - had to share :o)

>>That's great news - The Times - very impressive, I'm sure it will generate you a lot of business, did you write your own press release?<<
Yes - I wrote the release myself and then used the services of Press Dispensary who distributed it for me... Was very pleased with their service and will be using them for future releases that I produce as they will be going to the same journalists, etc.

Congratulations!
I have just launched a new online jewellery boutique, www.cleojewellery.co.uk.
However, when it comes to marketing it is not one of my strong points. Could you tell me whether you think a company such as the Press Dispensary would work for a small company like mine.
Thank you.

>>Could you tell me whether you think a company such as the Press Dispensary would work for a small company like mine.<<
Well - they worked for me and I'm just a one-man-band :o)
After I had completed the majority of the work on the site I begain thinking how I would promote it - initially I was a bit sceptical about a press release, but I gradually came around to the idea. Now, I'm so glad I did this.
Press Dispensary (www.pressdispensary.co.uk) charge £225 to write and distribute a release for you - or £135 to distribute only. (I wrote my own release and so went for the distribute only option). It went to around 1000 contacts.
For me I think it worked well because the concept I have is novel - this meant that a lot of iPod-related web sites picked up the story and ran it which resulted in a lot of hits to the site. For me, it was £135 well spent.
If you're writing your own release, try to focus on the unique aspects of your products or service - this will at least make your release stand out from the dozens that these people probably see each day.
Having said that, I don't know if a press release is for everyone. What I do know is that you could have the best and most unique products and/or web site around - but if no-one knows it's there, then your site won't do well. Having a good quality press release going out to the right people helps to raise awareness of your venture and was definitely a good choice for me.
Good luck!

Rod - just had my weekly Times Online Enterprises Bulletin e-mail and it features you on there too, so be prepared for yet more interest!
I have to say that it is really good to see a small business get good coverage - I'm now eaglerly looking at what angles there are to my proposed business that may be of interest for this type of PR work!

Wow - that's so cool!
D'you mind forwarding the email to me? Unfortunately, I don't subscribe to their mailing list - but I guess I better had, now :o)

Rod - congratulations! Sorry again that I never did a test run of this when I said I would but I'm sure you coped without me!
I'm humbled to see a Nerja Choice Rentals snapshot on your website there - very kind of you! Although you used my logo without permission
Like I said, congratulations, and I hope that really starts the ball rolling - I think the concept is great and could really take off.
Cheers

Cheers Sam!

Hehehehee...
My focus now is on populating the Directory with free guides such as the Nerja Choice Rentals one - and also encouraging third parties to create their own and submit them. Eventually I hope that a jam-packed directory will encourage more traffic to the site...
