Hello again,
I am almost ready to say goodbye to my loyal fax machine and kickstart an Internet business selling inkjet cartridges and other consumables. The biggest question I have been asking myself (hopefully you guys can help) is how can I compete with website owners selling products at rock bottom prices? Although the products I sell are of superior quality to most of the others available on the market I am unsure if people will see this and opt for me or go straight to discount e-tailers? I would appreciate any comments regarding what you pay at the moment for your inkjet cartridges and what motivates you to buy from your current supplier.
Thanks again
Jay

I have been selling a quality branded Epson compatible on Ebay for about 9 months. I am sure you are aware this is a very competitive market and the average person goes for the cheapest disregarding the quality aspect. I know of quite a few people who have used unbranded inks and have had to replace their printer due to problems arising from the poor quality of the inks. As you suggest it is certainly better to sell a trusted brand with a low return rate. I sell Inkrite and have had no returns in the time I have been selling them. I have negotiated a great price from them getting their 10K+ price so if you struggle to get good prices let me know and I will see if I can help. Bottom line being people need to be aware of the damage caused by poor quality inks etc.

iknow a guy that buys a new printer every time he runs out of ink because it is cheaper than the two cartridges,(but it comes with the black and colour included) sureley this is not sound practice for the manufacturers.

I agree with Alan.
I only do a few colour prints so I don't use the colour printer very often.
However the price difference between unbranded inks and printer manufacturer's own cartridges is so large that I always use the unbranded inks.
I've just done a google search for ink cartridges for my Epson printer and the first website in the list has the following prices
Unbranded Black £1.35
Unbranded Colour £2.05
Epson Original Black £15.45
Epson Colour £15.86
This was just the first site I found so others may be even cheaper.
The unbranded cartridges have always been fine so far. My digital photos look great - so I'm unlikely to ever try the expensive cartridges.
Common sense says you get what you pay for - but in practice the cheap cartridges seem ok.
As Alan says even if I ruin the printer a new one is cheaper than buying the cartridges - so it is worth the risk.
Having said all that... I imagine big business will always buy original cartridges. Perhaps that should be your target market rather than home users.

It's a shame people feel they have to buy a new printer every time their cartridges run out. It does say something about the printer manufacturers though especially HP & Lexmark. I've often thought of replacing printers before cartridges (you could probably make a tidy sum on the old ones on ebay). But as Bob says the trade market is more willing to pay for the cartridges and maybe even stockpile them??
