Retail employees outpace employees in all other sectors in terms of job satisfaction, a new study reveals.

New data from employee research experts ORC International show that 76% of employees in the retail sector feel satisfied with their jobs, exceeding all other sectors and a UK norm of 68%.

Nearly three-quarters of retail staff were also happy with their bosses’ managerial style and the amount of recognition they receive.

Managers must be appreciative of their talented employees, said Glenys Laycock, group HR director for Alpha Airports, which operates a variety of retail shops in airports throughout the UK.

“We trade in a highly competitive market where retaining the best people, involving them, listening to their views and acting on them gives us a real competitive edge,” said Laycock.

“When we’ve found that special sales consultant willing to start work at 4:30 a.m. and give tremendous service in a hectic environment where every customer has a plane to catch – quite simply, we want to hang on to them.”

Despite the retail sector’s recent struggles and threats of job cuts, three-quarters said they still feel secure in their jobs and intend to work for the same company in 12 months’ time, better than UK average of two-thirds who feel job security.

ORC International hailed the findings as very positive news for the UK’s retail sector.
