Hi,
can I run this one past you please. In the past I have done something called wardriving
as a hobby. Essentially this involves driving around in a car/bike with a laptop/handheld
connected to a wireless aerial on the roof and a GPS unit.
You then record the location of access points you pick up on a map. Sounds odd eh?
I'm a radio ham and have odd hobbies but I find it fun. I've been doing it for a number of years and I find it interesting to see the increase in home wireless networks.
It's also possible to see which access points you pass are running with some kind of security and which ones are not.
As I'm always looking for ideas to increase customers for my new PC repair, network etc company, I wondered about doing some wardriving (lets call it "wireless network security auditing") in my locale and then doing a leaflet drop in areas where I find unsecured access points, telling people that they could be running a wi-fi network which is possibly open to abuse.
I could then offer to secure their equipment for my normal call out rate.
What do you think? I understand I dont want to come over too frightening in my letter etc?
Thanks
D

Hi Dave
What i would do is just get 1000 leaflets printed on with all the scary facts of having an unsecure wireless network and then spend one week dropping them through the letterboxes in one neighbourhood.
If you can't target the specific households that don't have the security you might as well 'scare' everyone into the realsitic fact and probably gain more business. This will also give you a good toe dip into the deep!
Good luck

Dirky,
I like your idea!
Wireless networks are so cheap nowadays that everyone seems to be getting them! As an IT bod myself, I was called upon by my brother and a neighbour this Christmas who both had bought wireless networks and couldn't get them set up properly.
Rightly priced, I think it sounds as though you're on to a good thing!
Good Luck!

Thanks guys,
I did a short 'wardrive' last night, I concentrated on a couple of well populated areas and
found rather a lot of unsecured networks. In all I guess I spent 1 hour time, including getting
home and plotting the maps and printing them out.
Next I'll make some leaflets up on my letterhead and post them through all the doors in that area.
Cheers.
