Global Entrepreneurship Week is to be launched this week to promote a ‘can do’ culture among young people around the world.
Over five million people in 77 countries are expected to take part in the events which run alongside this week’s fifth annual UK Enterprise Week. The aim is to connect enterprising young people in the UK with their counterparts in other parts of the world.
Some 12,000 events are expected to take place as part of the week, which was created by the Make Your Mark campaign and the Kauffman Foundation. The UK is leading the way with 5,653 registered events coordinated by 2371 different organisations.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: “Global Entrepreneurship Week is a shining example of Britain leading the world in enterprise and innovation. At this time of unprecedented global change, I congratulate everyone involved in Global Entrepreneurship Week for encouraging people and countries to work together to find new ways to succeed.”
Those backing the week in other parts of the world include President Sarkozy, Governor Schwarzenegger and China’s equivalent to Donald Trump, Pan Shiyi.
Others supporting Global Entrepreneurship Week in the UK include big name entrepreneurs and leading business figures: Richard Branson; Peter Jones and James Caan of Dragons’ Den; Simon Woodroffe, founder of Yo! Sushi; Tim Smit, founder of the Eden Project; and social entrepreneur John Bird, founder of the Big Issue.
