Hi Bryan and welcome to startups.
Let me start by wholeheartedly encouraging you to look seriously into starting your own business. The satisfaction and sense of achievement that comes with building a business from startup to success are wonderful.
Have you put any thought into what you would like to do? Think about your personal strengths and qualities. What would you be good at? What expertise can you offer other people that will be of benefit to them in some way? What are you passionate about? What can you imagine doing and still enjoying in 10 years time?
Unfortunately there isn't much else I can help you with til you start getting an idea of what you would like to do. Once you reach that point then i'm sure myself and many others will be able to offer great advice also.
All the best,
Tamara

BAkid,
First of all it's good to here that you are setting out to become your own boss. It's a very brave step.
The first thing you will probably need to complete is a business plan. I'm pretty certain that this site will have resources that will help you in this space but if they dont feel free to contact me and I'll point you in the right direction.
Your business case will be the tool you use to get your banking set up, appoint accountants and legal resource etc. It is also a useful planning tool for you to monitor your performance against and drive your business.
You will need to think about the following:
1) What it is you want to do, what your business does and what makes it better than anyone else doing the same sort of thing!
2) Who your customers will be. What they want. How you will contact them and what your message will be when you do. How much it will cost you to get someone to be a customer. What you will need to charge them for your time (and how much they will be willing to pay)
3) What things you need to run your business. Tools, Transport, premises etc. Services like accountants, solicitors, insurances etc.
4) What your finances will look like. What will you spend each month and when and how you will be paid (this is your cashflow and it is important, you may have to do work 1 month and be paid for it the next, which means you will need to think about some form of credit - whether you pay this out of your savings or take a loan).
5) What company structure will you have? Will you be a sole trader or a ltd company and what are the tax implications involved?
6) What is the future of your company? Will you sell it? Will your son or an apprentice take over? What happens when you retire?
7) What sort of licences and accreditations do you need? Do you need to be a member of any regulated bodies? What does that cost?
Once you have answered all these questions and writen them down sit down and make your decision about whether you want to go ahead. Go and see your bank manager, solictor, IFA and accountant and tell them your plan. They will advise you on the next steps you need to take.
I hope this helps.

Hi Bryan.
Good electricians are certainly in high demand. With the way the housing market worldwide keeps rising the demand will only get stronger so definitly get into the game now.
Give yourself some goals to work towards and start deciding on timelines for everything. Are you currently employed as a electrician? How soon do you feel you can start your own business? What capital do you need to start up? Do you have a good list of contacts within the industry that you can turn to for potential work leads?
Jof has covered alot of the aspects that need to be taken into consideration so perhaps start compiling everything you need for a business plan.
All the best and keep us updated.

Hi
Congratulations on your decision it is not an easy one.
My advice would be get some business cards and join a networking group like BNI.
I did this when I started out by myself and I spend no money on advertising or on sales, plus I now have staff working for me.
A group like BNI meets every week and focuses on passing business to each other, how easy is that?
