The Startups forum is a popular resource for more than 100,000 new and aspiring business owners in the UK. Posts range from recommendations for web designers to venomous rants when HMRC’s website cracks under the pressure of deadline filing day. Tax doesn’t have to be taxing eh? Someone should pass the message on to whoever designed the HMRC site.

I digress. My point was about the Startups forum and just how useful a tool it can prove if you’re after the answer to that tricky importing problem, or the name of a decent accountant. But for some reason, which is well and truly behind my comprehension, the online gaming community seems to have found another use for it of late.

For those of you not familiar with World of Warcraft, it’s an online community fantasy game in which players assume the guise of various characters as they explore landscapes, complete epic quests and do battle with monsters. I think that sums it up. I apologise to any WoW disciples if it’s not entirely accurate but I’m not one for anything involving mythical goblins and dwarfs. I seem to be one of only six people in the world bored witless by the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The thing is, members of the Startups forum keep posting explanations on the intricacies of WoW controls, cheats and game plans. Forgive me for asking, but what has obsessing over the best way to achieve Experience Points got to do with setting up a business?

I’d therefore like to offer the rather enthusiastic WoW players on the Startups forum a choice: start posting about running a business or find another forum. Preferably one that welcomes talk on Orcs and Trolls.
