I'd always recommend going to a reputable high street bank and asking about their merchant service offering.  If you're taking payments over the phone try to get one that provides software or web access to validate payments otherwise they'll try and charge you to rent a terminal.

Be utterly paranoid about fraud. Card Holder Not Present fraud is enormous and the banks give you no protection. With ID theft the card is valid and passes their tests but 2 months later you, the merchant have to return the money. Do it too often and the card service will fine you $50,000.

Do read the small print.

You could try talking to the Forum of Private Business (FPB)

They can help their members to get a merchant account at a much cheaper rate then the banks charge.

Plus you have lots of other benefits like legal protection and advice, and it's very cost effective to join.

He was also mentioning the other day a new system to take car details via a mobile internet application meaning you could get card's processed when on site with your clients.

It's worth bearing in mind before going to far down the line that normally you need some trading history and a clean credit record to become a credit card merchant
