The UK’s best social enterprises are to be showcased at this year’s Enterprising Solutions Awards (ESA).

The awards are designed to find the UK’s most dynamic and innovative businesses that trade for a social purpose.

There are an estimated 55,000 social enterprises in the UK, according to government figures, with a combined turnover of £27bn per year.

“This year’s shortlist showcases the incredible range of the vital work being carried out by social enterprises across the entire UK,” said Jonathan Bland, chief executive of the Social Enterprise Coalition.

“From chocolate companies and graphic designers to care providers and community recyclers, all the social enterprises on this list are outstanding examples of what this exciting business model can achieve.

“By helping disadvantaged people get back into work, offering excluded young people a second chance, regenerating deprived areas, focusing on the environment and much more, these companies are using business principles to deal with the key issues facing Britain today.”

Among the finalists is Fairtrade chocolate company Divine, which is co-owned by a Ghanaian cocoa farmer’s cooperative. As well as receiving a fair price for their crop, the Kuapa Kokoo co-op gets a share of the company’s profits.

Another finalist is Thorplands United Football Club, a community owned football club, and Coin Street Community Builders, which was set up by local residents to regenerate the area between the Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges.
