Hi, I am writing as I plan to start my own small plastering business soon. Having never run my own business and always worked for other people I am confused on the business name options.
My question is:
Do I need to register my name if I just use all my initals, first, middle and surname, ie. J.A.B Plastering?

The only times you need to register your name are if you are planning on being a Limited company or you want the business name as a registered trademark.
When you start-up you do need to tell the Inland Revenue your business name though. It may be worth checking at companies house if your chosen business name is already in use in case you want to go limited later as well as registering the business name as a domain name. Even if you have no plans to have a website straight away, getting the domain name will mean you will prevent others from holding you to ransom at a later stage. Plus you can always just use it for email for the time being.

I would also like to enquire if anyone has any recommendations of a designer who could design me my advert that will eventually go on the side of my van.
Any good, affordable designers out there willing to help?

He is a freelance guy who does other things but I have seen his portfolio and it is excellent. Further, he has done the design for all literature for two of my businesses and both were excellent.....better still he is cheap!!!!!!!!
