Hi Scott,
First of all theres loads to know but first thing to get you started is to:
get yourself registered to as many free web directories as possible, type this into a search engine and a list should come up. yahoo-dir is also a good place to be registered but they charge a fee but may have a free service but be warn it takes at least two weeks to be placed if you pass their vetting.
Also as you may have read other threads like the meta tag one is put in your keywords in the meta tag keyword and also put in a met tag description of your website as search engine spiders do pick up on these oh and its all free.
(search on meta tag)
Another thing which is free and really good, is register to lots of forums and to include your website link so the more people clicking through to your site will help, AGAIN ITS FREE.
The most exensive thing will be your time all you could get a company to do all this for you but be warned they will charge a fair bit.
Another thing if you are on a budget is get yourself an SEO book, an easy read wood be Dummies for SEO but there are better ones but this is a good entry level book.
What else can i give you is that put your website on as many others as possible a reciprocal system would benefit you both, if you want we could start by putting each others banners on each other site, but i'm going through a phase of transition to a new look site so maybe in two weeks but you could start with others.
anyhow hope this helps a little but i'm sure there are a lot of better exerpts who will help.

I'm not sure that a few people clicking through to your website will help and forum mods are wise to people posting any old rubbish just to get another link online.

Thats true although I am not encouraging people to put on any rubbish as you won;t get the right reponses and people will just ignore you.
This is a free method and it helps to get some traffic and from some traffic you can at least start from a point to somewhere.
Hey if you have the money then why not take the route of using an SEO comapny but the methods are just the basics and something to get people to understand how SEo works.
I'd would those advise that you read up on SEO more before you start paying for another company to do the work for you at least then you will know what they can offer you for what you are paying, as there now seem to be a fair few rogue SEO companies out there.
