Hi, I'm setting up a limited company for a website portal and with all the different banks out there, I'm confused of which one to go with? I'm not looking to take out a loan yet so does it matter who I choose? Also, going forward I'll be looking to take payment so should I also be looking at merchant account services at this stage?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Have a search for various threads on this topic – the banks are really hit and miss and depend on your local branch.
I personally use the Abbey which is great if you don’t need to go to the branch and there are no fees (and not just for the first 18 months as all the banks offer)
Also the HSBC has a new "no fees" account which might be worth a look - especially if you need to borrow in the future. Abbey are a bit rubbish when it comes to loans, ie are more suitable to a service business where borrowing is not likely to be needed.

Yes as an ex Bank Managers wife with HSBC (Dont shoot me!) they are pretty good, although I have heard comments about their internet business banking portal being not that friendly .... however, I have never used it, the personal one yes, no probs with that one!
Yes I have heard that Abbey are doing free life banking for businesses!
Another good one is RBOS, they still seem to have a face ie you talk to the same person each time ...

We use RBOS and based on what they have done for my business they are excellent.
Their call centres are still in the UK, they are not closing local branches, I never wait more than 2mins on their phone banking etc...
BUT I guess also it all depends on the branch. So its important that you go and meet with the business manager there.
Good luck. If you are interested they are offering a deal right now that if a new person joins up for business banking the person who refers them gets £100 and the person joining gets £150. I have a friend who did this last week and we donated our £100 to the Macmillan cancer trust. If you do join up and dont know anyone else at RBOS to get this deal with then let me know, you can keep your £150 and I will donate our £100 directly to the Macmillan charity.
Cheers
Jacqui
