Hi i am 22 years old and i am a time served joiner, living in scotland
I am looking for some advice on how to go about setting up my own joinery business, i have been to the business gateway but they just gave me a print out of crap,
Would like some advice on how to get jobs other than word of mouth. I am not clued up on advertising etc
Sub-contracting???
Also help with a business plan or if anyone has a template???
Any other advice would be very appreciated, contacts within the business etc

Hi Michael.
Could you not approach carpenters and kitchen companies in your area? That may be the best starting point. Have you costed out equipment you'd need - starting with a bare minimum? Could you make furniture and have someone resell it through a boot sale or similar?
There could be many options depending upon where you want to start and your aspirations.

here's a few suggestions:
business card and leave it everywhere.
leaflets , flyers (local shops) or advert in local paper.
network (i know you said word mouth but all-important), local chamber or equivalent in scotland.
get a website - won't create business but on your bus card may convert some.
magnetic logo on van/car
Finally what about doing something free - new bed for a children hospital, generate PR.
Curiously enough i'm desperate for someone to fix a bedroom door but all our local joiners reckon the job is too small to bother with!!
