Hi,
I was wondering how does a telephone answering company work?
Lets say I sign up or a telephone answering service, I've got 0845.. number, when my clients call the TA company answer th all on my company name then put my client through to me or take a message if I'm not available but how could they connect me to my client whilst their on the other line. What kind of machine do they use? What is the process of it?
I would be grateful for any technical and practical info.
Much appreciated.

Ok take it at the moment you have and 0845 number which diverts to your standard bt or cable phone number.
If you divert this to a answer company, they will answer in your company name and can call/email/fax you with messages - depending on your requirements they can choose different option depending on the situation. You have to tell them what you want.
They can also transfer a call to you, i.e. I want all calls from "company x" put through to me, they can transfer the call to your mobile or landline - the line is not engaged as they will not call the 0845 number as that diverts back to the aqnswer company, they will your mobile or your standard non-diverted BT/Cable geographic STD code number.
The answer company will have a ISDN connection to an ISDN telephone system so the various lines incoming will show up who is calling and for what company (i.e yours), to transfer a call they will simply initiate a trunk-to-trunk transfer.
They do cost a bit - the more you want them to do above taking messages but if you miss a lot of calls they are far superior to voicemail or answer machines.

Hi Karajane,
Thank you for your response. Just a small query, let say I hired your service, would you answer all calls b my company name and then transfer the caller through to my line or do you answer the calls then just take a message and inform me later.
Much obliged.

No, I don't transfer calls at present, I take enquiries, messages, and even sales orders for some companies, then input the orders into their databases.
I am looking to start transferring calls, but as I said, not at the moment.
