I wanted to know if I can register a Business with a more generic Name say for eg ABC Ltd and then have different trading names such as "XYZ" Trading Name for ABC Ltd, "PQR" Trading Name for ABC Ltd. Can this be done?
The Reason I want to do this is for long term. At the moment I wish to have a one Business Name and a Trading Name relating to the Products I want to offer, However if I wish to offer more Products in a Different Industry then I would have a different Trading Name run my the Same Business. Its like the Easy Group, they have easyjet, easycar etc etc.
If this is possible, could someone advise me how do I Register a Business name as a Ltd Company and a Trading Name. I am a Sole trader at the moment, but I wish to secure the names as I will be change to a Ltd Company in the near future
Thanks for any Advise.
Dan

You can protect a business name by registering it with the National Business Register. They will check to ensure that the name is not being used by any other business in the UK (Limited Company, Sole Trader or Partnership) and then for £60 a year (plus VAT)you will recieve a certificate and your name will be protected so it cannot be pirated by any other business. If another business does try to use your name your £60.00 a year also includes legal cover and they will prosecute the other business to prevent use of your name.
You can contact them at www.start.biz
Hope this is useful and good luck with your business venture

The National Business Register, though, is a private concern and may not be able to exercise much legal clout in the area of protection.
Interestingly, Fast Fences is available as a business name according to their database, despite it being a Registered Trademark belonging to me. This suggests there may be some flaws in their system.
