Well, after a couple of months of hard work and hair pulling, my online shop is now officially open. Bearing in mind I had no experience whatsoever with web design before this project, I am pleased with the result.
However, as I am always looking to improve the site and attract customers, any feedback/suggestions/opinions anyone may have would be very gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

It's a nice site, quick, good illustrations. You need to optimise each page, not just your Homepage. You need links, 1000's of them as jewellry as you know is one of the most searched terms in the Internet today. In the davidcastle link to my forum, you will find a poster named crankydave - he is based in Chicago and has more Search Engine top spots in the USA than anyone I know for jewellry/jewelry - I see you have both spellings. If you can get your site listed through natural search as opposed to pay per click you could make a great deal of money. Good Luck

It's good you have had a go, but I really think you are going to struggle not only gaining visitors (unless you aim to spend on advertising) but also entincing people to purchase.
The home page looks very amateur. I really would lose it. It doesn't help your business.
Unfortunately another oscommerce site that looks the same as everyone else's. Not too sure on the logo - a flower when you are promoting jewellery? Also you have too much text on the home page and not enough images. There's nothing to draw the visitor in to your product pages.
I'm really sorry if this appears harsh. I know that when you build something yourself for the first time it gives a good buzz - but if you left it as it is I think your business could struggle.
Good luck though

Yes lose the home page. What purpose does it serve other than put an extra barrier between you and potential customers?
Also agree with too much text, make an 'about us' page for all of that information. Show more of your products instead.
Why have a drop down box for currencies and then only one currency?
Finally, why are you wasting so much space in the top right hand corner?
Cheers and good luck.

Something that I always suggest to clients (but they don't always do!) is make all of your product photos the same size. Some of your pages look a bit like the New York skyline with short fat photos, square ones and big tall ones.
Take whatever software you use to edit your photos and create an empty box that is square.
Now, for each photo paste the image into that box and save it. The end result is that regardless of whether a product is short and fat or big and tall, you'll end up with it in a box that is the same size as all the other boxes.
Reading that back, I'm not sure it makes much sense - if it doesn't let me know and I'll have another go!

To continue with the harsh theme (sorry), the colour scheme is a little annoying to say the least. I agree with the comment regarding the logo (no connection with the products), and I would remove the link to product reviews until you have some.
On the positive side, your jewellry e-parties are an interesting slant on things. Perhaps you could take it further by providing an internet stream for the party event - so you appear in person to answer and questions without having to travel. You just need a web cam and your host needs a web cam and something to view you on. This may inspire more people to attend an actual event and give them to confidence to ask questions and allow you to sell to them.

Don't really agree with the comment about the logo, since many companies have logos that bear no relation to what they do, but it looks like both the logo top left, and the "Easter Special" banner top right were created in Windows Paint? This program unfortunately produces horrible images when saved as jpegs. I would invest in something like Photoshop or Paintshop pro and re-do those images. They come out so much more professional looking.
On the website side of things, maybe there should be an abbreviation of YAOSC (Yet another OSCommerce site) for all the people starting these websites? Sorry, but I really can't stand OSCommerce.

Hi
Thanks for the honest feedback everyone. I actually came to the conclusion myself that maybe the original site colours weren't to everyone's taste and have spent the past couple of days coming up with a new colour scheme. I have find it quite difficult to come up with a scheme that fits in with the overall theme of the site and that isn't going to put off potential customers.
Anyway, I'd be very interested to hear from people who looked at the original site as to whether the new site looks better and indeed from anyone else who may have suggestions/opinions as to how I can further improve the layout of the site. I'm aware that I still need to do some work on improving the images. I also know that the site still looks fairly like the stock osc format but I do not have the technical abilities to customise it further and cannot afford paying a professional to do it for me.
Thanks in advance.
Donna.

Ok, well ignoring the fact that the images still need work (esp the quality of the logo), my immediate perception of the site when it opened was much better, Id be more likely to buy from you now than before.
Since you have no product reviews, it might be best to switch off the reviews box for a while so you don't look too much like you have no traffic to your site.
