The chancellor Gordon Brown has released additional funding to admit a second cohort to the New Entrepreneur Transatlantic Scholarships (NETS-UK) programme in 2006.

NETS-UK currently gives 20 New Entrepreneur Scholarships (NES) programme graduates the opportunity to travel to Babson College, Massachusetts, USA and learn entrepreneurial skills the “American way”.

This year will be the first in which NETS-UK has been extended to include 40 of the most successful New Entrepreneur Scholarships (NES) graduates.

The first cohort of NETS-UK scholars will travel in September, with the second cohort getting going in October.

Chief executive of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (NFEA) George Derbyshire, said: “This is a real achievement. NES is intended to help the most disadvantaged into business and illustrates the support we have right at top government levels. We are thrilled that we will be giving 40 graduates the opportunity to benefit from the “Babson experience”, it really is something quite unique”.

The NES is delivered by a partnership between the NFEA, the Prince’s Trust and the Association of Business Schools, and includes part-time management education to give scholars the skills to develop a workable business plan and to see it through.

Each scholarship also provides support for various categories of start-up cost, to a maximum of £1500, a programme of on-going business mentoring and access to support and advice at all times.
