Hello everyone,
I have recently joined this forum and am in the process of embarking on two schemes, interlinked. (whilst doing my day job, as one does).
One - is hand painted murals for kiddies bedrooms. I have some experience in this in South African, but have been in the UK for nearly 7 years now and keen to get back into that
and the 2nd is craft fairs - where I plan to sell hand crafted mosaics and paintings, as well as using this as a forum for promoting my name and hopefully obtaining commisions.
My query regards taking CC payments. I've found a couple of threads on this forum giving some useful information, however at this stage I need a kind of a quick temp fix to this problem. I've 'ordered' a business account which should be set up before the end of September, when my first craft show takes place. It seems I need that to get a merchant number and to get a system for taking credit card payments.
I was hoping to hire a terminal as I wouldnt need one very regularly, this seems to be expensive and it is unlikely I'd get it sorted by the end of the month (September). Is there any way I can do a sort of laptop + bluetooth to phone (for internet access) set up, as a temp measure to deal with cc transactions? Without knowing how many CC sales I would do, and how much turnover I;ll be doing, I dont really want to commit to the expense of a permanent mobile cc transaction machine. The banks dont seem to allow those old fashioned swipe machines unless you get it as a backup.
Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.
Many thanks,
Maureen

Hi Maureen,
Take a look at the National Market Traders Federation website. www.nmtf.co.uk
They have some info on their site about a cc system using a mobile phone.
Hope this helps,
Ian

Hi Maureen,
Glad to be of service. Please let us know how the system works for you if you go ahead. I would love to know how it works - I may wish to use it myself soon.

Will do, I've mailed the sales people direct to see what deal they do appart from deal with NMTF. I see they also do shopping basket s/w which looks good. No prices on the site, so will see what they come back with.
will certainly let you know, thanks

Are there any options where one can take payments on a one-off basis.
I plan to exhibit at fairs but not regularly so don't want to bother with the extra hassle and cost involved with merchant accounts etc at first. Is there anyway to "Hire" a service which enables you to take payments for a short duration i.e. 1-2 days.
On a off-topic note are you aware of a some sort of listing of nationwide craft and seasonal fairs? Not much out there that I have been able to find out.

Hi Raj,
No problem.
I'm still working on it, have applied for a business account with Abbey, which seems to be a better deal for me, free for life, though you get limited transactions. Under 100 per month free. This is perfect for me as I wont be doing more than that. Once I have that, then I'll get a merchant number through streamline, as its free to set up via the Abbey deal. Unfortunately I dont think its going to be set up in time, which leaves me a bit stuck, but am keeping my hopes up....
cheers Maureen

Sounds good with the Abbey deal.
So what are the options for you at the stall in abscence of a mobile CC solution?!
Hard cash? What are the merits of taking cheques - that's if people are carrying their cheque books and bank card?
What is the general price point for a product beyond which people tend to use a card? Most of my products are £25 plus - would the lack of CC payment put off potential buyers?

HI,
Well I;m a bit stuck really. Just phoned Streamline to check if they can make a plan but they have to wait for the business account to be set up before they can set up a merchant account. I did find out that you can rent terminals from 123send quite inexpensively, which I will probably do.
In the meantime , for the show, well, looks like I'll have to do cheques, or, post item when I recieve money. People dont really carry a lot of cash, so that wont really help me. I'll probably loose out on sales, but as its my first show, it will have to go down to experience. One of those things, unless I get really lucky...
Am hoping to use this as a forum for commissions anyway, so I wont loose out entirely.
Cheers
