is blogging really better than the usual advertising methods?

i'd say it depends on your product and your target audience. It's like saying is my local paper better than telesale.

As above, i think this depends wholly upon the item you are promoting. If you are trying to get more traffic to your website, then creating a blog will eventually enhance your listings in the search engines. However, it is best to keep the blog updated regularly. Another idea is to post comments on other blogs, with related content, and include links to your website. This will increase links back to your website and also advertise your products / services to the right audience.
If it is a website you are trying to promote, then there are numerous ways to attract more traffic to your site.

any blog's are better than no blog's but if your after a serious stratagy then contact an expert who will be able to advise. blogging should be part of the strategy not the entire startegy.

It depends on how well you promote the blog. If you work on the blog daily, and make sure it is pinged correctly, than it can work well for you!

I read some good blogs quite regularly, what makes them good for me? Regular Updating! I have stopped reading a number of blogs because they were updated sporadically, I know of a lot of blogs with high page ranks. However, I agree with the above poster that blogs should be part of the strategy and not the whole strategy!

To answer your question, yes and no.

If it is a money saving issue then by all means do some blogging - submit to directories with pinging feeds, write some unique articles and submit them to article directories, create link bait for social bookmarking sites such as digg, reddit, etc..

Note: If you do not have any constantly updated - interesting content on the blog, others are less likely to link back to you and spread the "link love" hence losing the viral effect.
