A fifth of all employees are wasting years of their lives in the wrong jobs. That was the finding of a recent poll by the Skills Commission.
The research suggested 20% of people are currently in a job they feel underutilises their skills, and 41% have spent a proportion of their working lives wasting their talents in an unappreciated role.
It may seem like a gloomy climate, but all this job dissatisfaction is actually great news. I wouldn’t be surprised if the record number of new business start-ups is a direct result.
According to Barclays, 471,500 new businesses started up in 2007. That’s 3% more than in 2006, and a whopping 17% more than in 1988.
There’s no better cure for boredom than a great idea. As your own boss, there’s simply no reason or excuse to let your talents go to waste.
The Skills commission report calculated the amount of hours wasted in unfulfilling jobs by UK employees equates to 132 million years. Surely that’s enough of a motivation to book that meeting with the bank manager?
